Insurance After a DWI in Texas
Texas calls it a DWI, and once you have one, plenty of insurance companies lose interest in you. We don’t. MIS Insurance Services has been insuring drivers after a DWI since 2009, and we can get you a quote whether you own a car or not. Send the form on this page or call (800) 726-0640.
DWI or DUI: Which Is It in Texas?
For adults the Texas charge is DWI, driving while intoxicated. DUI is a separate, lesser Texas charge for drivers under 21 who have any alcohol in their system. Insurance companies treat both as alcohol offenses. This page says DWI.
What a DWI Does to Your Insurance
- Many standard companies raise the rate sharply or refuse to renew the policy.
- After a conviction, DPS requires an SR-22 on file for two years.
- If you want an occupational license so you can drive to work during a suspension, the court asks for an SR-22 first.
- Each insurance company decides how long a DWI counts against your price. It is often three to five years.
What Does DWI Insurance Cost in Texas?
SR-22 insurance at MIS starts as low as $29 a month in Texas. Prices vary. The number depends on your record, how recent the DWI is, your age, where you live and whether a vehicle is on the policy.
The state’s DWI fine and the DPS fees are separate from your insurance. Our guide to Texas DWI steps, deadlines and fees lists them.
The SR-22 After a Texas DWI
The SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company sends to DPS. It shows that you carry at least the Texas minimum: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage.
Two details save people money and time:
- The two years start at the conviction. They do not start when you buy the policy, so waiting does not shorten anything. It only delays getting your license back.
- A lapse is reported. If the policy cancels, your insurance company tells DPS. DPS can suspend your license again and charge a $100 reinstatement fee.
Our Texas SR-22 insurance page covers the filing in full.
If You Do Not Own a Car
DPS still wants the SR-22. A Texas non-owner policy provides it with no vehicle on the policy, and it normally costs less than insuring a car. See Texas non-owner SR-22 insurance.
