Insurance After a DUI or DWAI in Colorado

A Colorado DUI puts two things on your list that an insurance agency can take care of: a policy from a company that will accept you, and the SR-22 the DMV wants before you can reinstate. MIS Insurance Services has handled both for drivers since 2009. Call (800) 726-0640 or send the form on this page and we will get you a quote.

DUI and DWAI: Colorado Has Two Charges

    • DUI applies when your test is 0.08 or higher.
    • DWAI, driving while ability impaired, applies above 0.05 and under 0.08.

A DWAI adds 8 points to your record. A first DWAI by itself usually does not take your license, so it may not come with an SR-22. Insurance companies still count it as an alcohol offense, so expect your price to change either way.

    What Changes with Your Insurance

    • The company you have now may charge more at renewal or decline to renew.
    • If the DMV revoked your license, an SR-22 is the first step on its reinstatement list.
    • If you reinstate early with an ignition interlock, the DMV applies the interlock rule to every vehicle you own, co-own or have access to. Tell us which vehicles those are.

What Does DUI Insurance Cost in Colorado?

Colorado SR-22 insurance at MIS starts as low as $29 a month. Prices vary. Your test result, your history, your age and whether you insure a vehicle all move the number. We shop it with several insurance companies and give you the exact price on the phone.

    The SR-22 in Colorado

The SR-22 shows the DMV that you carry at least Colorado’s minimum liability coverage: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage.

How long you keep it depends on the offense. The DMV says it is generally 9 months to 3 years:

    • First offense under 0.15 with no accident: 9 months.
    • Repeat offenses, or an accident was involved: 3 years.
    • 0.15 or higher, or a refusal: go by the date myDMV lists for you.

Keep it continuous. Per the DMV, letting it lapse is enough by itself to get your license suspended. Switching insurance companies is fine, as long as the new company files its SR-22 before the old one comes off. More detail is on our Colorado SR-22 insurance page.

With a Car or Without One

With a car. We set up the auto policy, add the SR-22, and can include comprehensive and collision if you want your own car covered.

Without a car. An operator’s policy, better known as non-owner insurance, counts as proof in Colorado. See Colorado non-owner SR-22 insurance.

Colorado DUI Insurance Questions and Answers

Can I get insurance after a DUI in Colorado?

Yes. We work with insurance companies that accept a DUI or a DWAI, and we can get you a quote.

What is the difference between a DUI and a DWAI for insurance?

A DWAI is the lesser charge, for a test above 0.05 and under 0.08. Insurance companies count both as alcohol offenses, though each company prices them its own way.

Do I need an SR-22 after a DUI in Colorado?

If the DMV revoked your license, yes. The SR-22 is the first item on the DMV’s reinstatement list.

Do I need an SR-22 after a DWAI?

Maybe not. A first DWAI by itself usually does not revoke your license. Check myDMV, which lists exactly what the DMV requires from you.

How long do I need an SR-22 in Colorado?

Anywhere from 9 months to 3 years. The offense decides it. The DMV lists 9 months for a first offense under 0.15 when no accident was involved.

How much is insurance after a DUI in Colorado?

Every record prices differently. Colorado SR-22 insurance at MIS starts as low as $29 a month. Prices vary.

Can I get an SR-22 while my Colorado license is revoked?
