Arizona Non-Owner SR-22: Covered Without a Car
Arizona’s MVD is direct about it: if you don’t own a vehicle, you need a non-owner insurance policy to get an SR-22. MIS Insurance Services can set one up for you, starting as low as $29 a month. Prices vary depending on your record and your situation.
Our agency has worked since 2009 with drivers other companies turn away. More than 3,000 customers have reviewed us on Google, and our rating is 4.9 stars. Call (800) 726-0640 or send the quote form on this page, and a licensed agent will walk you through it.
SR-22 and Non-Owner Insurance, Explained
Arizona uses the SR-22 to track what it calls future financial responsibility. It is a certificate from an insurance company, filed with the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), saying you have the required liability coverage and will keep it.
A non-owner policy gives the insurance company a way to issue that certificate for a driver with no vehicle. The coverage is tied to you. It applies when you are behind the wheel of a car that is not yours and that you don’t use regularly.
Who Files a Non-Owner SR-22 in Arizona?
The MVD requires an SR-22 after an alcohol or drug-related revocation, a DUI suspension, refusing a test, certain insurance violations, and unpaid judgments. You would file it through a non-owner policy if:
- You have no vehicle registered in Arizona
- The cars at your home belong to other people and you don’t drive them
- You are getting a restricted ignition interlock license and need an SR-22 on file for it
- You gave up your car but still have time left on your three years
- You drive only when you rent or borrow
Arizona Non-Owner SR-22 Pricing
Pricing at MIS starts as low as $29 a month for an Arizona non-owner SR-22. Prices vary. We look at what led to the SR-22, your driving history, your age and your city.
You are insuring one driver and no vehicle, which keeps the cost down compared with a regular auto policy. MVD reinstatement fees are a separate charge that you pay to the MVD. For your own number, call us or send the form on this page.
What You Are Covered For
If you injure someone or damage their property while driving a borrowed car, your non-owner policy responds, up to its limits. For the MVD to accept the SR-22, the limits must be at least:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $15,000 property damage liability
The vehicle owner’s insurance generally applies before yours does. Higher limits are available on request.
Where a Non-Owner Policy Stops
Know these exclusions before you buy:
- Vehicles you own are not covered
- Vehicles owned by a household member are not covered
- A vehicle you can use whenever you like is not covered, even with the owner’s permission
- Work driving is not covered
- The borrowed car’s own damage is not covered. There is no collision or comprehensive on this policy
If you see yourself in that list, look at standard Arizona SR-22 insurance instead. One call to us will settle which one you need.
How Long Arizona Requires an SR-22
Three years is the usual answer. For a revocation, a DUI suspension or a test refusal, the MVD counts three years from the date the revocation or suspension ends. For insurance violations, it counts from the date you become eligible to reinstate. A restricted interlock license needs the SR-22 for as long as you hold it.
Your MVD paperwork shows your dates. A non-owner policy has to cover every day of that period.
Lapses Are Expensive in Arizona
If your coverage lapses during the required period, the MVD can suspend your license until you show proof of insurance again, and it adds a suspension fee. Automatic payments are the easy way to avoid that. If you need to change anything on the policy, call us first.
Buying or Borrowing a Car Long Term
A non-owner policy is built for occasional driving. The day you buy a car, or a relative hands you the keys to one for good, the policy needs to change. Call us and we will add the vehicle and move you to a regular auto policy while your SR-22 stays in place with the MVD.
Moving out of Arizona? Call us before you cancel anything. The MVD decides whether to release you from the requirement.

Reinstating an Arizona License
Besides the SR-22, the MVD may ask for reinstatement and application fees and, after an alcohol-related offense, an ignition interlock. Much of this can be done online at AZMVDNow.gov. Starting as low as $29 a month at MIS. Prices vary by driver.
Who needs non-owner SR-22 insurance in Arizona?

Three in most cases. The MVD sets the start date.
Does non-owner SR-22 insurance reinstate my driver’s license?
It takes care of the insurance part. The MVD may still require reinstatement fees and, after an alcohol-related offense, an ignition interlock.
What is the difference between non-owner and regular SR-22 insurance?
Both satisfy the MVD in the same way. A regular policy is tied to a vehicle you own, while a non-owner policy is tied to you and has no vehicle on it, which keeps the price lower. See Arizona SR-22 insurance.

Yes for liability, when the borrowing or renting is occasional. No for damage to the car you are driving, and no for a car you can use any time you like.
