Texas Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance Without the Runaround

Texas DPS will not lift certain suspensions until an SR-22 is on file, and it does not matter whether you own a vehicle. If you don’t, DPS itself says to ask about a Texas non-owner SR-22 policy. MIS Insurance Services writes them starting as low as $29 a month. Prices vary from driver to driver.

We have been insuring high-risk drivers since 2009 and have more than 3,000 Google reviews with a 4.9-star rating. Fill out the quote form on this page or call (800) 726-0640. A quote takes about 3 minutes.

    How a Texas Non-Owner SR-22 Works

Texas calls the SR-22 a Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate. It tells DPS that an insurance company is standing behind you for at least the state minimum liability limits. An insurance card or a copy of a policy will not do. DPS only accepts the SR-22 itself.

A non-owner policy is liability insurance written on a person. There is no car listed. It protects you when you drive a vehicle you don’t own once in a while, and it is what the SR-22 gets attached to when you have no vehicle to insure.

When Texas Drivers Use a Non-Owner Policy

DPS usually requires an SR-22 after a DWI conviction, a suspension that followed a crash, a court judgment from a crash, or repeat convictions for driving without insurance. The non-owner version makes sense when:

    • You have no vehicle titled or registered to you
    • You are not a regular driver of a car in your household
    • You need the SR-22 to apply for an occupational license
    • Your car was sold, repossessed or wrecked while your two years are still running
    • You only drive when you borrow a truck or rent a car

    Texas Non-Owner SR-22 Rates

Our Texas non-owner SR-22 policies start as low as $29 a month. Prices vary. The reason DPS wants the SR-22, your record, your age and where in Texas you live all go into the rate.

With no vehicle to cover, a non-owner policy generally runs lower than standard auto insurance. Keep in mind that DPS charges a reinstatement fee of its own, paid directly to DPS. We can have your exact price for you in about 3 minutes.

Coverage on a Texas Non-Owner Policy

The policy pays other people when you are at fault in a car you don’t own. To count for an SR-22, it has to carry at least the Texas minimums:

    • $30,000 for injury or death of one person
    • $60,000 for injury or death of two or more people
    • $25,000 for property damage

When you borrow a car, the owner’s policy is usually first in line and yours is second. Ask us about higher limits if the minimums feel thin.

    Limits You Should Know About

Most problems with non-owner insurance come from using it for the wrong vehicle. These are not covered:

    • A vehicle titled or registered to you
    • A vehicle owned by your spouse or anyone else in your household
    • A vehicle you have regular access to
    • A company vehicle or any driving you are paid to do
    • Damage to the vehicle you are driving, since the policy has no collision or comprehensive coverage

Own a vehicle or drive the same one most days? A standard policy with an SR-22 is what you need. See Texas SR-22 insurance, or read the full Texas non-owner SR-22 coverage rules and restrictions.

    The Two-Year Rule in Texas

Texas sets the SR-22 period at two years from the date of the conviction that triggered it. If the SR-22 comes from a judgment after a crash, the two years begin on the date the judgment was rendered.

That clock does not pause because you have no car. Whether the SR-22 sits on an auto policy or a non-owner policy, it has to be on file with DPS for the full two years.

    What Happens If It Cancels

Insurance companies notify DPS automatically when an SR-22 ends. If no new SR-22 is filed before the old policy stops, DPS can suspend both your driver license and your vehicle registration. Pay on time, and talk to us before you switch companies so the new filing is in place first.

    When You Get a Vehicle

Bought a truck? Call us the same day. The non-owner policy does not extend to a vehicle you own, so it has to be changed before you drive. In most cases we add the vehicle, convert the policy to standard auto insurance and keep your SR-22 on file without a break.

The same call applies if someone in your home gets a vehicle you will be driving.

    Reinstating a Texas License

Texas Non-Owner SR-22 Questions and Answers

    What is non-owner SR-22 insurance?

A non-owner SR-22 is liability insurance written on a person, not a vehicle, with the Texas SR-22 certificate filed on top of it. It lets you meet a DPS requirement when you have nothing to insure.

How much does non-owner SR-22 insurance cost in Texas?

It starts as low as $29 a month at MIS. Prices vary with your record, your age, your location and why DPS requires it.

Who needs non-owner SR-22 insurance in Texas?

Anyone DPS has told to file an SR-22 who has no vehicle titled or registered to them. Common reasons are a DWI conviction, a crash-related suspension or repeat no-insurance convictions.

How do I get non-owner SR-22 insurance in Texas?

Use the quote form on this page or call (800) 726-0640. A quote takes about 3 minutes, and once you buy we send the SR-22 to DPS electronically.

Can I buy non-owner SR-22 insurance online in Texas?

You can start online with the quote form on this page, and an agent finishes it with you. Call (800) 726-0640 if you want it done right away.

What does non-owner SR-22 insurance cover?

It pays for other people’s injuries and property damage when you are at fault in a vehicle you don’t own. Texas minimums are $30,000 per person, $60,000 per crash and $25,000 for property damage.

Can I get an SR-22 in Texas if I don’t own a car?

Yes. DPS tells drivers who don’t own a vehicle to ask an insurance provider about a Texas non-owner SR-22 policy.

How long do I need non-owner SR-22 insurance in Texas?

On the date of the conviction, or the date of the judgment if it came from a crash.

Does non-owner SR-22 insurance reinstate my driver’s license?

Not by itself. DPS also expects the reinstatement fee and any other items on your record. You can see the full list on the DPS License Eligibility website.

What is the difference between non-owner and regular SR-22 insurance?

The filing DPS receives is identical. What changes is the policy under it: a standard policy lists your vehicle, and a non-owner policy lists only you. With no vehicle on it, the non-owner policy generally costs less. See Texas SR-22 insurance.

Can I get non-owner SR-22 insurance with a suspended license?

Yes. A suspended license does not stop you from buying the policy, and DPS usually needs the SR-22 on file before it will reinstate you.

Does non-owner SR-22 insurance cover rental cars or cars I borrow?

It gives you liability coverage when you borrow or rent a vehicle now and then. Damage to that vehicle is not covered, and neither are vehicles owned by people in your household.

Who has the cheapest non-owner SR-22 insurance in Texas?

Rates depend on the driver, so the cheapest company for one person is not the cheapest for the next. We compare insurance companies for you. In Texas our non-owner SR-22 starts as low as $29 a month. Prices vary.

How soon is a Texas non-owner SR-22 filed?

Once you buy the policy, we file your SR-22 with DPS electronically and send you a copy.

Can I use a non-owner SR-22 to get an occupational license?

An SR-22 is one of the things required for an occupational license. If you don’t own a vehicle, a non-owner policy can provide it.

    Does a non-owner SR-22 cover my spouse’s truck?

No. Vehicles owned by people in your household are excluded.

Do I still need a class after a DWI in Texas?

Often, yes. See our Texas DWI education programs page for programs across Texas.
