Colorado Non-Owner SR-22 for Drivers Without a Car

Getting a Colorado license back often takes an SR-22, and you don’t need a car to file one. A non-owner SR-22 policy from MIS Insurance Services gives the DMV what it needs, starting as low as $29 a month. Prices vary with each driver’s record and case.

We are a broker, so we shop specialty insurance companies that accept drivers with a DUI, points or a suspension. Since 2009 we have earned over 3,000 Google reviews and a 4.9-star rating. Send the quote form on this page or call (800) 726-0640 to talk with a licensed agent.

    What a Non-Owner SR-22 Is

Colorado treats the SR-22 as a guarantee. Your insurance company promises the DMV that your liability coverage is in force and that it will report if the coverage stops. It is added to a policy. It is not a policy of its own.

For someone without a vehicle, the policy it gets added to is a non-owner policy. That is liability insurance on you as a driver. It applies when you drive a car you don’t own and don’t have regular use of.

    Is a Non-Owner SR-22 for You?

The DMV asks for an SR-22 after a DUI or DWAI, a high BAC result, a refused chemical test, too many points, or driving without insurance. Filing it on a non-owner policy works if:

    • You have no car and no regular use of one
    • The vehicles in your household are not ones you drive
    • You are between cars and your SR-22 period is still open
    • You want your license reinstated now and plan to buy a car later
    • You only drive a borrowed or rented car occasionally

    Cost of a Colorado Non-Owner SR-22

A Colorado non-owner SR-22 from MIS starts as low as $29 a month. Prices vary. The offense behind the SR-22, your overall record, your age and your address all affect it.

The filing itself is a small part of the cost. What matters is finding an insurance company willing to write the policy at a fair rate, and that is the part we handle. The DMV’s reinstatement fee is separate and goes to the DMV. Call us or send the form for a price based on your own details.

    Coverage Under the Policy

Your non-owner policy pays for harm you cause to others when you drive a car that is not yours. Colorado’s minimum liability limits apply:

    • $25,000 for injury or death of one person
    • $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people
    • $15,000 for property damage

Expect the car owner’s policy to respond first and yours to follow. You can raise your limits above the minimum at any time.

    What Is Left Out

Be clear on what a non-owner policy leaves out:

    • Your own vehicle, if you buy one
    • Vehicles belonging to people you live with
    • Any vehicle you drive on a routine basis
    • Driving that is part of your job
    • Physical damage to the vehicle you are in. This policy does not include collision or comprehensive

If you own a car or drive one routinely, you need a regular auto policy with the SR-22 on it. See Colorado SR-22 insurance, or call us and we will point you to the right one.

How Long Colorado Requires It, by Offense

Colorado sets the period by what happened. According to the DMV:

    • A first offense with a BAC of .08 or higher: 9 months, or 3 years if there was an accident or a high BAC
    • A DUI or DWAI conviction: 1 to 3 years
    • Refusing a chemical test: 1 to 3 years
    • More than one offense with a BAC of .08 or higher: 3 years

Your own period is on your DMV paperwork. Confirm the end date with the DMV before you cancel, because canceling early leads to a new suspension.

    If Your SR-22 Stops Early

In Colorado, a canceled SR-22 is enough to suspend your license all over again. The insurance company tells the DMV when the SR-22 ends, and the suspension follows for that reason alone. If you are changing insurance companies, the new SR-22 has to reach the DMV before the old one lapses. We handle that timing for you.

Adding a Car Down the Road

When you are ready for a car, we update the policy. The vehicle is added, the coverage becomes a regular auto policy, and the SR-22 carries over so the DMV never sees a gap. Please call before you drive the car home, since a non-owner policy does not cover a vehicle you own.

A change in your living situation counts too. If a new roommate or partner has a car you will be driving, let us know.
