What is an SR-22 and Why Do I Need It?

An SR-22 is a special insurance proof certificate that must be filed to the Colorado DMV to help you get your license reinstated. The SR-22 is one part of the process to reinstate your license if it was suspended or revoked for specific violations, such as a DUI, driving without insurance, or too many points in a short time.

The SR-22 filing allows the DMV to monitor your insurance status closely.  If your SR-22 insurance policy cancels for any reason, the insurance carrier is required to report it to the DMV.  If your SR-22 cancels and you are still required to have it, the DMV will suspend your license again, so it is important to keep your SR-22 policy active to keep your license active.

    How Do I Get a Colorado SR-22?

MIS Insurance makes the process simple, and you can have your SR-22 in minutes:

Who Needs an SR-22 in Colorado?

The Colorado DMV requires an SR-22 to reinstate your license after a suspension or revocation for certain driving violations or accidents involving financial responsibility.

You may need a Colorado SR-22 after:

    • A DUI or alcohol-related driving offense
    • Too many points for too many traffic tickets in a short period of time
    • Driving with a high BAC
    • Refusing a chemical test
    • Driving without insurance
    • An accident resulting in a Financial Responsibility Act suspension
    • Other serious violations that result in the suspension or revocation of your driving privileges

How Do I Check My Colorado License Status?

If you’re not sure what you need to do to reinstate your Colorado driver’s license, start by checking your status with the Colorado DMV.

Your individual requirements may include an SR-22, reinstatement fees, proof of insurance, an ignition interlock device, treatment requirements, or other documentation.

It’s important to know exactly what the DMV requires before you purchase insurance, especially if you’re trying to get your license reinstated as quickly as possible.  Make sure to find out if you are eligible to reinstate your license right away, or if there is a waiting period.

What Are Colorado's State Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements?

Colorado requires drivers to carry minimum liability insurance coverage. The minimum limits are:

    • $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person in an accident
    • $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people in an accident
    • $15,000 for property damage in an accident

Higher coverage limits are available, as well as other types of coverage, such as comprehensive and collision protection for your car, if you need to get a car covered.  If you’re unsure what coverage you need, MIS Insurance can help you determine your options before you purchase a policy.

How Long Do You Need an SR-22 in Colorado?

For most cases, you will need to have an SR-22 for 3 years in Colorado. Every case is different, so check with the DMV to confirm your exact requirement period. However, keep in mind that the SR-22 requirement period starts on the date you go to the DMV and reinstate your license.

Often drivers assume the SR-22 time period is from the date of the incident, or the conviction, or the date they purchased the SR-22.  This is not the case – make sure to check with the DMV to confirm your exact dates.  Do not cancel your SR-22 without confirming the end date with the DMV, as this can result in a suspension if you cancel early.

    What Happens If Your
    Colorado SR-22 Lapses?

Maintaining continuous coverage is one of the most important parts of having an SR-22.

If your Colorado SR-22 insurance is canceled or lapses while you are still required to have the filing, your insurance company notifies the Colorado DMV. This can result in another suspension or additional requirements before you can legally drive again.

    That’s why it’s important to:

    • Keep your insurance policy active
    • Make your premium payments on time
    • Avoid letting your policy cancel for non-payment
    • Make sure a new SR-22 is filed if you switch insurance companies

It is important to note that if you let your SR-22 lapse while it is still required and you get a traffic ticket while the SR-22 is lapsed, your license can be suspended for a year. Make sure to avoid this by making up any missed payments promptly to avoid lapses in coverage and stay on top of your policy renewal dates to avoid your policy expiring.

    Colorado Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance

Don’t own a car? No problem.  You can get an SR-22 without a car.

A Colorado non-owner SR-22 policy gives you the state-minimum liability insurance and the SR-22 filing you need if you don’t currently own a vehicle.

Non-owner insurance may be an option if:

    • You need an SR-22 to reinstate your license
    • You don’t currently own a car, and you don’t have regular access to a car
    • You occasionally drive vehicles you don’t own
    • You need to maintain your SR-22 requirement while you’re between vehicles

A non-owner policy provides liability coverage when you’re driving a vehicle you don’t own or have regular access to. It does not provide coverage for the vehicle itself.

If you don’t own a vehicle, let us know when you request your quote, and we’ll help you determine if a Colorado non-owner SR-22 policy is right for you.

How Much Does a Colorado SR-22 Cost?

The SR-22 filing itself is not expensive, but having a suspended license and an SR-22 requirement limit your eligibility with most standard insurance carriers.  And, standard insurance carriers who can cover you usually apply a substantial surcharge for violations like a DUI.  However, as a broker, we work with specialty insurance carriers who cater to drivers who have traffic violations, including DUIs, accidents, and suspensions, and need an SR-22, so we can shop for the best rate for your situation.
