Federal data shows 176 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes on recent Halloween nights. MIS Insurance Services shares what drivers should do before and after a night out.
CULVER CITY, Calif., October 28, 2026 — With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, MIS Insurance Services, an independent insurance agency in Culver City, is urging California drivers to plan a sober ride home before the costumes go on.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 176 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver on Halloween nights from 2019 to 2024. Among them were 31 pedestrians, many of them out walking on one of the busiest nights of the year for families on the street.
“Halloween is one of the worst nights of the year for drunk driving, and the people who get hurt are often kids and parents just walking the neighborhood,” said Mat Sabzehroo, owner of MIS Insurance Services. “Every November we get calls from drivers who made one bad decision on Halloween night. The easiest DUI to deal with is the one that never happens. Take a rideshare, pick a designated driver, or stay where you are.”
Before Halloween night, MIS recommends
- Decide how you’re getting home before the first drink, and keep a rideshare app ready on your phone.
- Pick a designated driver who won’t drink at all, not one who “only has a couple.”
- Drive slowly and watch for kids in dark costumes crossing mid-block, especially from 6 p.m. to midnight.
- If a friend has been drinking, take their keys.
If you’ve already been arrested for a DUI
In California, a DUI arrest can lead to a license suspension, and getting your license back usually requires an SR-22, a form your insurance company files with the DMV to prove you’re insured. Many drivers are dropped by their insurance company after a DUI and don’t know where to turn.
