How the Texas SR-22 Works
The Filing
An SR-22 in Texas is a Financial Responsibility Certificate filed by your insurer with the DPS. It verifies you carry at least $30,000/$60,000/$25,000 in liability coverage. It is attached to an insurance policy, not a standalone product.
Duration
Two years of continuous coverage from the date of conviction or civil judgment. Any lapse can extend the requirement and trigger suspension of your license and vehicle registration.
Lapse Consequences
Your insurer must notify the DPS if your policy lapses. Reinstatement requires a new SR-22 filing and a $100 DPS fee, plus any other outstanding fees. Continuous coverage throughout the two-year period is essential.
Policy Options
Auto SR-22
For vehicle owners. SR-22 attaches to your auto policy. We compare carriers for the best rate.
Non-Owner SR-22
For drivers without a vehicle. Meets Texas liability minimums. Covers occasional use of another person’s car only.
Converting Later
Buy a vehicle down the road? We convert your non-owner policy to full auto coverage without interrupting your SR-22 filing.
Check Your License Status
Use the Texas DPS License Eligibility website to view your license status, compliance requirements, and any fees owed. Once everything is resolved, your status updates to eligible.
